How to choose the best Air Conditioning unit for you?

Updated: Apr 27, 2020

During this time of the year, which is summer time, most people opt to buy their air conditioning units from their local suppliers. According to our research from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the peak HEAT INDEX observed last April 15, 2020 in major cities in the Philippines was 53 degrees Celsius with a relative humidity averaging at 58% The effect of this to our body is so dangerous that if we are continually exposed to this heat, it can lead to body cramps, exhaustion and more likely to have a heat stroke which could lead to fatality. But, what is “heat index”? According to PAGASA, “HEAT INDEX – is a human discomfort indexes that gives the "apparent" temperature or what humans perceive or feel as the temperature affecting their body. High air temperatures and high relative humidity will give high apparent temperatures or indices. Full exposure to sunshine can increase the heat index by 8°C.”

One of the tips that PAGASA suggested was to stay indoors as much as possible. If air conditioning is not available, it is better to stay on the lowest floor, away from the sun. Thankfully, some of the air conditioning suppliers right now such as Frostlite and its 40+ partners are continuously delivering good quality units to serve the community. With Frostlite’s accreditation from 15 major brands like Carrier, Midea, Daikin, Gree, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Gree, LG, etc., they are fully committed to deliver the right unit for you. But what is the right unit for your space? There are some FAQs that every client needs to consider first before choosing the right one: 1. Location. The area where the unit is going to be installed is the first thing to consider. The geographical details of a city and the country will determine design conditions like average temperature and humidity that a location is experiencing for the correct cooling load computation. We can get these details in ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) or in PAGASA.

2. Space use and dimension requirement. In a residential space, the rule of thumb for choosing the right air conditioning unit is 1 horsepower (hp) for every 10 square meters of floor area. However, this is just the quickest and simplest way to compute for it. More things to should be considered for space requirements like such as the use of space, doors, windows, slab area, ceiling area and other openings in which detailed engineering is required. In other establishments like offices, commercial spaces, a consultation with professionals, i.e., Architects and Mechanical Engineers considering these factors for a more accurate computation of cooling load computation for a space. 3. Appliances / Equipment schedule. A space will always have lighting and equipment as there will be no life if there will be nothing in that space. In calculating the cooling load of a space, Lighting Power Densities (LPD) and Recommended Heat gain of equipment must also be considered. In this area, the owner must take into account the quantity of lighting that he/she will install and also the equipment that he/she will use in everyday living (television, coffee maker, gas stove, etc.). In this area, equipment specifications either from the nameplate or some reference materials will be the basis of this information. Also, a Professional Electrical Engineer can be of help to get the wattage of each equipment. 4. Human Occupancy. Heat emitted by humans is also a huge factor in cooling load calculation. Gender and human activity are specifically the most important ones. A male occupant emits more heat when he is doing heavy work or athletic activities in a gym (430 watts) than if he is sitting, watching and a play inside a cinema/theater (100 watts) inside with 330 watts difference. This value will be occupied with the number of persons doing the work. Adding these factors will be the total cooling load of a certain space that could be a big help in choosing the right unit for you. Other considerations are as follows: 1. Residential Air Conditioning Units a. Window type b. Wall Mounted 2. Commercial Air Conditioning Units a. Floor Mounted b. Ceiling Cassette c. Ceiling Suspended d. Ceiling Ducted 3. Motor Type a. Inverter b. Non-Inverter

There is no right or wrong brand in choosing an air conditioning unit. For a customer, it is just a matter of preference. However, as far as expertise is concerned, Engr. Willis Carrier, and the founder of Carrier Engineering Corporation in 1902, is also the inventor of the modern air conditioning unit. Carrier has been one of the leading air conditioning brands both in the international and local scene for many years and together with Midea and Toshiba under Concepcion Industries Corporation, people are assured of great quality and service offered by these brands. These three major brands are carried by FROSTLITE, together with 12 more major air conditioning brands. Below is a list of air conditioning partners which accredited FROSTLITE as a dealer/partner: Frostlite’s 15 Major Brands
